Tighty Whitey Chase

Tonight, we're going into NY to have dinner with Mike and Jeffrey who we have not seen for a while. Yum, ethiopian! I also have not had ethiopian food for a while. I can't get enough of it. We're going to Meskerem Ethiopian Restaurant. Yay.

What I'm diggin'

Since Bill's column was not in the online version of the Times Herald today, I've decided to steal how he ends his articles. Today, I'm diggin' CSAs aka Community Supported Agriculture. Find a farm near you! CSAs are a type of "cooperative" where consumers purchase "shares" in the farm, and in return receive the produce that is farmed. Rich and I will be buying a share from the Watershed Organic Farm. It's a bit more vegetables than we're used too, but we will learn to eat better.

Rock n' Roll: I can't stop listening to the Fruit Bats. A local Chicago band, I didn't find out about them until AFTER I'd moved away from Chicago. Mr. Bill brought them to my attention and got me Echolocation for Christmas. You have to love bands that utilize mandolin. Mandolin savvy bands are my current kick.

Intellectual Freedom

Tonight, I attended a lecture with Nancy Kranich who is the Chair of the ALA's Intellectual Freedom Committee. It was really interesting. Who knew it was going to be the librarians fighting the good fight for civil liberties? USA PATRIOT act, Copyright Laws, Access to Information... These issues affect a lot of people, just not librarians.

To comment on something on Allison's blog, I agree with her rally cry to boycott Urban Outfitters. They're selling a Voting is for Old People t-shirt. I think it's ugly. It would've been better if they'd decided to do a "Voting is Hip" or "How is a Bill made into Law" tee like their New Jersey: only the strong survive shirt. It would've been more hip, trendy, retro, or whatever adjective they're aiming for.

Content lacking in Sex/Drugs/Rock n' Roll

Julie's requested that I make my content more interesting by writing more about sex/drugs/rock n' roll. Luckily, Jon Bon Jovi is from New Jersey, as is the Boss. Unfortunately, I don't have anything to do with that scene. Instead, I went to class and then to Barnes and Noble. They didn't have the book I wanted, The Dante Club, in stock. I needed to pick a book that has facts in it that I can check for class. I'm assuming it has some historcal fact in it because it's labeled as "historical fiction." It's either this book or Maus; but Maus is a graphic novel, and I'm not sure if I can use it. So, instead, I bought an Indian cookbook.

Anyway, Sharon was working at the Cafe in BN, and she bought me a cup of tea, which I thought was really nice. I know Sharon from the Highland Park Irish music session that Scott has taken me to a few times. I have a hard time differentiating between the names Sharon and Shannon. It's similar to the problem I had making a distinction between Michigan and Wisconsin. I could never remember which one I was really referring to. Is Bong Recreational Area in Michigan or Wisconsin? Answer: Wisconsin. I know the difference now. Maybe I can conquer my Shannon/Sharon disability next.

Climate Change and Banning Gay Marriage

Who knew it would finally catch up to us? According to a secret report released by the Pentagon, climate change will result in global catastrophe in the next 20 years. But, apparently, banning gay marriage has a greater precedent national than adverting environmental and nuclear disaster.

Biore lovin' without King Cake

We had the weekly dinner tonight. We made a recipe that Henning gave us with salmon, pasta, apples, cream, mustard, honey, and dill. Lots of dill. It turned out to be a very nice dinner. Aftwards, in the downtime, we had a Biore Pore Strip (Nose) party. Scott, Cynthia, Henning, and Katy participated. Scott wins for the most gunk, Henning wins for the least. We will be doing pore stips again on Saturday before the formal.

For dessert, I really wanted to have a King Cake. We've had them for the past 3 years, and when I was living with Julie and Emily, we had a big Mardi Gras party. Princeton does have several bakeries, but they are more of the fancy little fruit tart bakeries than the full service breads, muffins, doughnut, cake, coffee bakeries like Bennison's in Evanston or the Swedish Bakery in Chicago. I did find a french bakery that had a picture of a King Cake, but it didn't have actual King Cakes in stock. So, there was no King Cake for us tonight. I'll try harder next year.

Rich got his TV tuner in the mail today. He's making his own Tivo. He's doing a test run on CSI:Miami right now.

Success!

I did manage to catch Sex in the City last night. Ally was very nice and took Katy and me to see it at Quad. It was an good episode and a very well done conclusion to the show. I have to admitt that I cried. I'm easily affected by movies, plays, etc. I still can't believe it about Mr. Big's real name, though.

Sex in the City

Tonight is the Sex in the City series finale. I got hooked on it when I had caught a few episodes when I stayed up all night in San Antonio to catch my flight back to Chicago after Northwestern lost the Alamo Bowl in Dec. '00. I have been unsuccessful in trying to find somewhere to watch it, almost comically unsuccessful. Holly and Julie are watching it at Holly's back in Chicago; Mike, Jeffrey, and Regina are watching it at Mike's place in NYC. I'm sure there are several bars in both cities having "Sex in the City" watching parties, but I can't find anywhere in Princeton, NJ to go. I know a few people who have HBO, but I don't know them well enough to invite myself over to their homes. I also know that the various Eating Clubs and Sororities at Princeton probably have HBO, but again, there is the problem of access. Oh well.

Triplets of Belleville

Katy got 2 formal dresses today! They were on super sale at Macy's and hard to resist. The Princeton GC Formal is next week. It's a waltzing formal, the first that I will be attending. They'll have a live orchestral group playing 1, 2, 3 all night.

I went to see the movie The Triplets of Belleville tonight. It was recommeded to me because it's a bicycling movie. It's an animated film, in French, and very interesting/odd. It's not my favorite animated movie of all time, but it was worth watching. It's been getting rave reviews.

It feels like Spring. It hit a high of around 55 degrees today. I hope it stays warm, but I'm sure a blizzard will hit or it'll drop down to the single digits again.

Last night, Sandrine had us over for dinner. She made a French potatos au gratin. It had sliced potatoes, sauteed onions and chunks of ham with melted wheels of french cheese on top. It was delicious. Afterwards, we headed to the D-Bar to listen to DJ Cyl spin. Somehow, it turned out to be undergraduate night. It was fun to watch them get stopped at the door and then having to go around asking graduate students if they would sign them in. They made everything very crowded.

Exotic Citrus Night

Tonight, a bunch of us went to an Exotic Citrus event. The Flavor club at Princeton had an event where they brought in David Karp, a fruit expert, to talk about Citrus fruit. We got to sample an interesting bunch after he finished his talk. He brought various oranges that are not released on the market yet, and some funky shaped ones, like lemon/orange things shaped like hands.

Sangria

Rich and I met up tonight with a bunch of Eagleton fellows at Little Spain in Newark for some Spanish food and sangria. A fellow fellow's family owns the restaurant and it serves up some excellent food. If you happen to be in Newark and need to get something to eat outside the airport, I'd recommend that you go there. Rich has discovered that he really likes sangria. I think Little Spain's sangria is the best that I've had so far.

One thing that I really miss about Chicago is all the great, small, ethinic, eclectic restaurants that are in close proximity. I also miss Metromix. It's hard to figure out different or new places to eat because you just never know about them. New Jersey lacks a comprehensive and up-to-date dining/theater/music/misc. review website.

Jaci (my former neighbor in Chicago) is engaged! Her fiance is Thaddeus, who is a chef in Chicago. Woo hoo!

In other news, I'm a big fan of Kenya. I first discovered this site while reading Lietz's blog on Badgers. It's catchy and JeffreyBear cute. I can't get the song out of my head.

For my policy project and policy memos for the semester I've decided to write on Voting machine security and also the restrictions on research due to the provisions of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA). Both topics are very techie and you can find lots of opinions on those on the web and also on Slashdot. Plus, it helps that I've had a friend who'd been sued by the RIAA under the provisions of the DMCA.

Princeton Grad Match

Last night (Valentine's Day) there was a Princeton grad Valentine's Day dance sponsered by various school groups. Xcott was in charge of putting together a "computer matching" system aka the Grad Match. People logged into a website and filled out various survey questions. Xcott's program then matched people based on how their answers were graphed in Euclidean space (or something like that). Everything worked, most guys got around 3 or 4 matches while the women typicall received 5-8 matches. Good job, Xcott! He put in a lot of effort into the whole thing, and it went off without a hitch. The website was hilarious too, all young Mark Hamill and David Cassidy.

I've decided to jump on the bandwagon and start my own blog. So unoriginal of me, but at least I have this so it's a bit more of my color than how it was originally on the template. It's not like I really have that much interesting to say. Rich is on his way back from Maine right now, and he's bringing back lobsters. He got them fresh off the boat this morning, for the most part. Yum. Hooray for Maine.

Andrew's gone now. He left for Australia about 2 hours ago. I created this blog so I can get a link on his website. People keep on telling me I should update my website since I haven't for a long time. Won't the people who go to harraton.com be surprised when they go to check their email.
